Stop loss clusters, made simple
Every stop loss is an order waiting in the market. When lots of them bunch up at the same price, they form a stop loss cluster, and big players need that liquidity to fill their own orders. This guide shows where the crowd hides its stops, what happens when they're hunted, and where to put yours.
The short version
Clusters above price are the stops of traders who are short: when hit, they become buy orders. Clusters below price are the stops of traders who are long: when hit, they become sell orders.
LOOK TO BUY WHEN
- Price is at strong daily or weekly demand. No level, no trade.
- The cluster under the obvious low has just been swept and price has snapped back.
- Your stop goes beyond the zone and beyond the swept cluster, where few other stops sit.
Take profit at the next cluster above: it's the magnet.
LOOK TO SELL WHEN
- Price is at strong daily or weekly supply. No level, no trade.
- The cluster over the obvious high has just been swept and price has dropped back.
- Your stop goes beyond the zone and beyond the swept cluster, where few other stops sit.
Take profit at the next cluster below: it's the magnet.
The one rule
Only trade the SLCs at key, strong technical levels. A sweep at weekly or daily demand or supply is a gift. A sweep in the middle of nowhere is just fuel for the move to carry on.
Where the crowd hides its stops
Most traders are taught the same thing: put your stop just under the last swing low, or just over the last swing high. So that's where everyone's stop ends up. Watch the clusters grow as the obvious levels form.
Place your stop
You're long after a bounce from daily demand. The crowd's stops are bunched under the obvious swing low. Drag your stop, then play the market and see if it survives.
Bigger isn't always first
A common belief is that price makes a beeline for the biggest cluster. It doesn't have to. It often takes the smaller, nearer one first, and anyone relying on the big one being next gets caught.
No level, no trade
A sweep only turns price when it happens at a strong level, where real buyers or sellers are waiting. Without one, the stops that get hit simply become market orders in the same direction, and the move carries on.
Five mistakes to avoid
Now try it for real
Stop Hunter gives you five trades. Drag your stop and take profit, then watch the big fish hunt the crowd's clusters.
See the real clusters
Everything here is illustrative. FXSSI's stop loss clusters tool shows where the crowd's real stops are bunched, right on your chart. QDB pairs it with the QDB Sheet and strong daily and weekly levels.
